Liberal Nova Scotia MP fined $600 for breaching election financing law

HALIFAX — The Commissioner of Canada Elections has fined Nova Scotia MP Jaime Battiste $600 for violations of the federal election law related to campaign contributions and expenses during the 2019 federal election.

The Commissioner found that Battiste violated four distinct provisions of the Canada Elections Act concerning donations and expenditures. The main penalty was levied for contributing an additional $1,400 to his own campaign, exceeding the maximum allowable personal contribution limit of $2,600.

Furthermore, Battiste was penalized for receiving $8,051 in campaign donations into his personal bank account, despite the Act stipulating that only a financial agent is authorized to accept such contributions. He was also fined for using a personal credit card to cover campaign expenses and for providing inaccurate information in his campaign return.

The Commissioner noted that the total financial penalty was set at $600, reflecting his cooperation during the investigation process.
