OTTAWA: Health Canada has reported that dog food and treats are the cause of a Salmonella outbreak spreading across the country. The health agency stated that its investigation found that many individuals who became ill had handled dog food and treats prior to their sickness.
The agency issued a warning, noting that people can contract Salmonella through contact with dogs, their food, treats, or their waste.
The following dog food products have been identified as sources of the Salmonella infection:
- Puppy World Lamb Lung Treats (150g, 340g, 454g bags)
- Puppy Love Chicken Wing Tip Treats (120g bags)
- Puppy Love Chicken Breast Treats (120g, 300g bags)
- Puppy Love Beef Chew 6-inch Treats (Value Pack, four pieces)
- Puppy Love “Twisty Junior” Beef Treats (Value Pack, five pieces)
Case Breakdown
The agency reports that a total of 31 cases have been reported across Canada:
- Fourteen cases in Alberta.
- Fourteen cases in British Columbia.
- Two cases in Ontario.
- One case in the Northwest Territories.
Seven of these individuals were hospitalized with symptoms including chills, nausea, and vomiting.
