Progressive Conservatives to Form Majority Government in Newfoundland and Labrador

ST. JOHN’S: The Progressive Conservative (PC) Party has secured a victory in the Newfoundland and Labrador provincial election, unseating the Liberals after a closely fought campaign. The win, led by PC leader Tony Wakeham, ends a decade of Liberal rule in the province.

After the final votes were tallied, Wakeham’s PC Party claimed a narrow majority, winning 21 seats in the 40-member House of Assembly. The incumbent Liberal Party, led by John Hogan, secured 15 seats, while the New Democrats (NDP) won two, and Independents claimed two. The defeat marks a significant setback for the Liberals, who were attempting to secure a fourth consecutive term in office.

The Tory victory is seen by some as reflecting a broader federal trend, following the Federal Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre, who won three rural Newfoundland seats earlier in the spring.

Notably, the New Democratic Party (NDP) gained an additional seat, now holding two, despite never having previously secured more than five seats in the legislature.

When the election was called, the party standings in the 40-seat legislature were: Liberals with 19, Progressive Conservatives with 14, NDP with one, two Independents, and four vacant seats.
