VANCOUVER — The ongoing strike by the B.C. General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) is once again affecting customers of the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC). As the job action enters its sixth week, disruptions are being experienced at driver licensing offices across the province.
ICBC confirmed that the public service workers’ strike is now impacting some of the busiest centres, including Surrey and certain parts of Metro Vancouver.
Walk-in services at ICBC may also be disrupted. Customers who have scheduled road tests or licensing appointments are advised to check their email or phone for the latest updates. This is not the first time ICBC users have been affected by the strike; some customers reported canceled appointments when the job action first began in early September.
The union, which represents approximately 30,000 public service employees—including staff at Service BC and driver licensing counters—is striking over demands that include higher wage increases.
In related news, all provincial liquor and cannabis stores, as well as provincial liquor distribution warehouses, have been fully shut down as a result of the ongoing job action, which also affects restaurants, pubs, and bars.
