Coutts Border Blockade Appeal: Appeals of Two Convicts to be Heard in Alberta Court Today

CALGARY – An Alberta court is scheduled to hear the appeals of two men convicted in connection with the 2022 Coutts border blockade. Chris Carbert and Anthony Olenick are seeking to have their sentences overturned.

Carbert and Olenick were sentenced last year to six-and-a-half years in prison for their roles in the blockade and for possessing weapons. Olenick was also convicted for possessing a pipe bomb. The two were, however, acquitted by a jury of the more serious charge of conspiring to murder RCMP officers.

The Coutts blockade was part of a larger series of protests across Canada against COVID-19 restrictions and vaccine mandates. Police discovered a cache of weapons and ammunition near the blockade site, which led to the arrest of the two men.
