US Imposes 50% Tariff on Canadian Waste Imports Following Trump Declaration

OTTAWA- Beginning Friday, the cost for dumping Canadian garbage heading south to the United States has increased by 50 percent. A proclamation signed by U.S. President Donald Trump on October 23 adds Canadian municipal waste, sewage sludge, and clinical waste to the list of goods subject to a 50 percent duty.

Taking effect on Friday, October 30, this directive creates a substantial financial burden for Canada to export and dispose of its waste across the American border. Canadian provinces—particularly Ontario—ship millions of tonnes of waste annually to landfills in U.S. states such as Michigan.

With the new duties now in effect, Canada faces pressing challenges to expand its domestic landfill capacity and bolster its national waste management infrastructure.
