U.S. ambassador cancels speaking appearance in Ottawa due to ‘important’ meetings with White House officials

OTTAWA- U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra has abruptly cancelled a planned speaking engagement in Ottawa, after being called back to Washington, D.C. for urgent high-level discussions. The announcement came just over an hour before Hoekstra was scheduled to participate in a fireside chat at the 2025 Canada Strong and Free Networking Conference. Organizers informed attendees that the program had to be adjusted due to the Ambassador’s sudden departure for meetings at the White House.

Hoekstra had been slated to discuss the Canada-U.S. relationship alongside Adam Bolek, the CEO of The Canada Strong and Free Network. According to a statement from the U.S. Embassy, the Ambassador had already spent the week in Washington leading a business delegation at the SelectUSA Summit. While he was originally expected to return to Ottawa for the conference, a spokesperson confirmed he was instead required to remain in the capital for “important meetings” with senior White House officials.

The sudden cancellation has fueled speculation regarding the status of ongoing trade relations. However, embassy officials declined to confirm whether the urgent meetings were specifically related to current CUSMA (Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement) negotiations. The conference, a major annual gathering for Canadian conservatives, continued with its revised schedule as delegates and analysts look for further clarity on the nature of the Ambassador’s sudden recall.
