OTTAWA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay an official visit to Canada on December 11 and 12. The visit aims to strengthen diplomatic ties and expand bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors between India and Canada. The announcement was formally made by the High Commission of India in Ottawa.
The scheduled visit follows a phone conversation between Prime Minister Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. During the call, both leaders discussed boosting ties in trade, energy, technology, and security.
Taking to social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi described Tuesday’s conversation as warm and productive. He emphasized the need to further solidify the India-Canada strategic partnership, noting that joint efforts by both nations will contribute to global stability and prosperity.
Aiming to Double Bilateral Trade
According to the Prime Minister’s Office of Canada, both nations aim to expedite negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). Efforts will also be intensified to double bilateral trade between the two countries by 2030.
Both leaders welcomed the upcoming visit to India by a 300-member business delegation led by Canadian International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu. The trade mission is expected to unlock new opportunities in trade and investment.
Discussions on Energy, Security, and Global Affairs
The dialogue covered potential cooperation in energy and agriculture, as well as geopolitical developments in the Indo-Pacific region. Reports indicated that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney appreciated India’s ongoing efforts toward a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Both leaders agreed to maintain close communication ahead of Modi’s visit.
Pushing to Strengthen Diplomatic Ties
The announcement comes shortly after Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand visited New Delhi to hold discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The primary goal of those talks was to enhance trade, investment, technology, security, and people-to-people connections.
Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming trip holds significant importance amid ongoing efforts to rebuild and enhance bilateral relations, paving the way for broader economic and strategic collaboration.
