Toronto: Olivia Chow has been re-elected as the Mayor of Toronto in the Ontario municipal elections. Olivia secured her victory by leaving her primary opponent, Brad Bradford, far behind. As counting reached 98.2 percent, Olivia Chow captured 54.1 percent of the votes, while Bradford managed to secure only 41.1 percent. Olivia won with a clear lead of approximately 125,564 votes.
Speaking at her campaign headquarters following the announcement of her victory, Olivia expressed her gratitude to the public.
“The people of Toronto have delivered their verdict. To those who voted for me and to those who did not, to those who wondered if their voice was being heard, and to everyone working hard to make this city their home—I assure you, I am your mayor too,” Chow said.
Reducing the Cost of Living as the Primary Goal
Olivia centered her campaign on promises to reduce the cost of living in the city and provide relief to its residents:
- Public Transit (TTC): She promised that TTC bus and subway fares would not be increased and that commuters making 10 trips a week would receive subsequent trips for free.
- School Lunch Program: She committed to expanding the student nutrition program in schools to include lunch, which is estimated to save families an average of around $880 per child.
- Tenant Protection: She announced the establishment of a dedicated task force to protect tenants’ rights and take action against predatory landlords.
- Tax Policy: Chow clarified that property tax increases would strictly align with the rate of inflation.
Opponents’ Arguments and Reactions
During the campaign, Olivia strongly opposed Bradford’s pledge to completely freeze property taxes, warning that it would impose a severe financial burden on city residents in the future.
On the other hand, Bradford had criticized Olivia for raising property taxes by a combined 18.6 percent over her past three years as mayor. However, once the election results were out, Bradford called Olivia Chow to extend his congratulations, stating that he accepted the people’s mandate and that there was no question Olivia is the mayor of the city.
A Historic Victory
Having originally assumed office through a 2023 by-election, this victory grants Olivia Chow the opportunity to serve a full term. The win also enabled her to avoid the stigma of becoming a mayor defeated in their first re-election bid.
Olivia Chow also announced that as the first step of her new term, she will immediately convene all 25 members of the City Council to plan future initiatives for the city’s development.
