Calgary: Former Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has warned that low voter turnout in the upcoming referendum could pave the way for a victory for separatists. The crucial vote is scheduled to take place on October 19.
Citizens across Alberta will vote on whether to remain a part of Canada or initiate constitutional and legal proceedings to secede from the country. Expressing concern, Kenney noted that if voter turnout drops below 40%, it could play directly into the hands of independence supporters. While current opinion polls indicate that a majority of residents favor staying in Canada, he cautioned that the outcome could shift if federalist voters fail to show up at the polls in large numbers.
Kenney pointed out that complex ballot questions and long queues might discourage people from voting, particularly federalist supporters in densely populated urban areas. In contrast, he highlighted that separatists are likely to turn out with high enthusiasm and strong organization.
To send a clear message and ensure the future stability of the province, the former premier urged all federalist-minded citizens to actively participate in the referendum and cast their votes.
