TORONTO- The University of Toronto has announced a flagship $100 million scholarship initiative designed to recruit world-class researchers and doctoral scholars to Canada. This marks the largest scholarship program in the history of Canadian higher education.
Titled the “Presidents’ Impact Scholarship Program,” the initiative will grant selected researchers $80,000 annually over four years, totaling $320,000 per scholar. This funding places the university’s financial support on par with leading research institutions in the United States and the United Kingdom.
The $100 million fund was established through a matching mechanism: a $50 million endowed gift from a Canadian charitable foundation with a long history of supporting higher education, which was matched dollar-for-dollar by the University of Toronto.
Set to launch in September 2027, the first cohort will provide four-year funding to 12 or 13 scholars. By the fourth year of the program, the total number of active scholars will reach 50, a level that will be maintained permanently moving forward.
