TORONTO- Two police officers have been injured after a suspect vehicle collided with a police cruiser during an auto theft investigation in Rexdale, Toronto.
According to police, officers responded to the area of Islington Avenue and Elmhurst Drive around 2:30 a.m. on Thursday following reports of an attempted break-in into a parked vehicle.
Upon arriving at the scene, police observed two vehicles attempting to flee the area at high speed. One of these vehicles crashed into the police car, causing the suspect vehicle to roll over as a result of the impact. It remains unclear whether the suspect vehicle involved in the crash was stolen.
Both injured police officers were transported to the hospital, and their injuries are reported to be non-life-threatening. The driver of the vehicle that struck the cruiser was taken into custody and also transferred to the hospital. Details regarding the driver’s identity and the extent of their injuries have not been disclosed.
Responding officers briefly pursued the second fleeing vehicle, but it managed to speed away. A search is currently underway to locate the outstanding vehicle and suspects.
Following the crash, Elmhurst Drive has been closed between Islington and Turpin avenues, and drivers are requested to use alternate routes.
