VANCOUVER — Authorities in the Village of Clinton, British Columbia, have issued more than $15,000 in fines over the past two weeks to individuals defying an active wildfire evacuation order.
Residents were ordered to evacuate on July 24 due to the fast-moving Pear Lake wildfire, an out-of-control blaze that has grown to nearly 1,500 square kilometres.
Enforcement and Safety Concerns
A violation ticket for illegally entering an area under an evacuation order comes with a fine of $1,150. Local officials noted that while they sympathize with the stress and uncertainty faced by displaced residents, adhering to the order is essential for public safety and the protection of emergency responders. Authorities warned that further fines will be issued to anyone caught breaching the restricted zones.
Village officials also reassured property owners that local RCMP officers and security personnel are actively patrolling and monitoring empty homes and commercial establishments. No incidents of looting have been reported in the area.
Property Assessments and Utility Restoration
Power has been restored to the area, enabling some evacuated residents to view their properties remotely via surveillance cameras. Local authorities cautioned that authorized personnel are currently accessing private properties to conduct complete damage assessments, which may account for visible activity around certain homes or businesses.
