Alberta unveils next steps for passenger rail plan

CALGARY — The next phases of Alberta’s highly anticipated Passenger Rail Master Plan are set to be officially unveiled today, marking a massive milestone for transit infrastructure in the province.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen will host a joint press conference at Calgary International Airport to reveal comprehensive details of the plan, which aims to revolutionize provincial transportation. Minister Dreeshen had confirmed earlier this year that the long-term master plan was finalized and scheduled for public release within the coming weeks.

A primary objective of the master plan is to establish a seamless passenger rail network connecting the province’s two largest metropolitan hubs, Calgary and Edmonton. Crucially, the blueprint outlines a direct rail link between both cities’ international airports and lays the initial framework for future high-speed rail services across the region. Chris Dinsdale, President and CEO of the Calgary Airport Authority, will also attend the high-profile announcement at the airport’s international terminal.

The provincial initiative aligns with a recent City of Calgary study, which identified an airport rail connection as a top transit priority for the city. That study recommended developing an east-west rail link to connect Calgary International Airport with future CTrain light-rail extensions. The provincial government now aims to successfully integrate these municipal transit extensions into Alberta’s broader regional and high-speed rail ambitions.
