More than 17,000 vehicles are being recalled across Canada following two separate safety notices issued by prominent automotive manufacturers. The recall campaigns, which address potentially dangerous airbag inflator failures and severe engine manufacturing defects, impact a wide range of popular pickup trucks and luxury sport utility vehicles.
In the first notice, General Motors is recalling over 200 light and heavy-duty trucks due to a manufacturing defect in their side curtain airbag inflators. According to the company, the affected airbag systems risk deploying suddenly without any vehicle crash or impact occurring. General Motors warned that an unexpected deployment could propel structural fragments directly toward vehicle occupants, presenting an immediate risk of injury. The recall specifically covers four models: the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado, the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado HD, the 2018 GMC Sierra, and the 2019 GMC Sierra HD. The automaker confirmed it will contact affected owners by mail, advising them to bring their vehicles to an authorized dealership to have both side curtain airbag modules replaced free of charge.
Simultaneously, Toyota has issued a much larger safety recall affecting nearly 17,000 vehicles nationwide due to critical engine manufacturing defects. Transport Canada reported that certain vehicles may contain residual metal debris within the engine assembly that was not properly cleared during production. Over time, this debris can cause the crankshaft bearings to fail, resulting in rough engine performance, a failure to start, or a sudden engine stall while driving, which dramatically increases the risk of a highway collision.
The engine issue exclusively impacts vehicles equipped with Toyota’s 3.4-litre twin-turbo V6 engine, spanning the 2024 Lexus GX 550, the 2023 and 2024 Lexus LX 600, and the 2023 and 2024 Toyota Tundra models. This action expands upon previous recall campaigns initiated by the manufacturer. Toyota stated that while it is still finalizing the exact technical repair plan for the affected powertrains, it will notify all known owners by mail and instructs concerned drivers to verify their vehicle status through the official brand recall databases.
