OTTAWA: A significant safety recall has been issued for over 20,000 Jeep Cherokee SUVs across Canada due to a mechanical flaw in the power transfer unit (PTU). According to a notice posted by Transport Canada, the defect involves certain vehicles equipped with a two-speed PTU that may become damaged and fail unexpectedly. This failure poses two major safety risks: a sudden loss of drive power while the vehicle is in motion or an unintended rollaway while the vehicle is parked.
The recall, initiated by manufacturer Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (Stellantis), specifically affects Jeep Cherokee models produced between 2019 and 2023. Officials warn that if the PTU fails, power may not reach the wheels, or the vehicle could move even when shifted into “Park” if the parking brake is not engaged. These scenarios significantly increase the risk of crashes or injuries to occupants and bystanders.
The scope of the issue extends across North America, with a concurrent recall issued in the United States by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). While 20,781 vehicles are affected in Canada, the U.S. recall impacts an additional 61,711 units. The manufacturer has stated that it will notify affected owners in writing; however, a finalized repair solution is currently “under development.” Drivers are encouraged to use their parking brakes consistently until the corrective actions are implemented.
