SURREY, BC – A significant step has been taken to address the housing crisis in Surrey with the official opening of Bentley Place, a new permanent supportive housing complex. Located at 13559 Bentley Road, near the Gateway SkyTrain station, the six-storey building is designed to offer stable housing and comprehensive services to those experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
During the opening ceremony, B.C. Housing Minister Christine Boyle and MLA Amna Shah highlighted the transformative impact of the project. They emphasized that by providing a safe and permanent roof over their heads, vulnerable individuals can be brought into the mainstream of society and given the stability needed to rebuild their lives.
Comprehensive On-Site Support
The facility is managed by the Phoenix Society, a local non-profit dedicated to social recovery. Residents of the 60 studio units will have access to 24/7 on-site staffing and a suite of essential services, including:
- Daily nutritional meals.
- Life skills and employment training.
- Direct access to healthcare and community support services.
Safety is a primary focus of the development. The building features a controlled single point of entry, comprehensive CCTV monitoring, and a fully fenced, well-lit perimeter to ensure a secure environment for both residents and the surrounding neighborhood.
A Landmark Partnership
Bentley Place was made possible through a collaborative effort between the provincial and federal governments, BC Housing, the City of Surrey, and the Phoenix Society. The financial commitment to the project was substantial, with the B.C. government providing $18.5 million for construction and an additional $2.4 million in annual funding for ongoing operations.
Local officials believe this initiative is a crucial part of the broader strategy to solve Surrey’s housing challenges. By combining secure housing with wraparound healthcare and vocational supports, Bentley Place aims to create a more resilient community where everyone has a place to call home.
