Rising Cost of Living: Canadians Turn to Budgeting Apps to Stay Afloat

OTTAWA – As the cost of living continues to soar across Canada, a growing number of residents are turning to digital budgeting tools and apps to navigate the ongoing financial crisis. While inflation rates have seen a slight dip recently, the high cost of everyday essentials remains a significant burden on household finances.

Calgary resident Kristen Oram is among those feeling the squeeze. She notes that rising prices at supermarkets, coupled with increased car insurance premiums and fuel costs, have made maintaining financial stability an uphill battle. “Managing money has become like a second full-time job,” Oram shared, highlighting the stress many Canadians face in balancing their monthly budgets.

In response to this widespread financial anxiety, Calgary-based software developers Ahmed Raza Jamal and Florencia Chomski have launched a new mobile application called Waypoint Budget. The duo was inspired to create the app after returning from their engagement in Italy, only to realize that saving for a home and a wedding in the current economic climate was nearly impossible without meticulous tracking.

Chomski explained that while several budgeting apps already exist, many are either too complex for the average user or lack essential features. Waypoint was designed to be simple and effective, helping users gain a clear picture of where every dollar goes. The developers observed that the primary source of anxiety for Canadians is the disconnect between stagnant wages and the rising cost of goods.

The creators of Waypoint suggest that the first step toward financial control is the discipline of recording every minor expense. By tracking spending for just one or two months, users can often identify patterns and areas where they can save. For Oram, adopting a strict budgeting habit has not only helped her manage her finances but has also significantly reduced her mental stress, offering a glimmer of hope for a more stable future.
