Toronto Braces for Severe Winter Blast: High Winds and Heavy Snow Prompt Alerts

TORONTO – Just as the city prepared to welcome the official start of spring, Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) have been pulled back into the grip of severe winter weather. Environment Canada has issued a series of warnings as a powerful weather system brings a combination of biting cold, heavy snowfall, and damaging winds to the region starting Tuesday morning. Residents have been urged to exercise caution as the sudden shift in conditions creates hazardous environments for travel and outdoor activities.

The primary concern for meteorologists is the intense wind speeds expected to sweep through the GTA. Forecasters predict western gusts reaching between 70 and 90 km/h, which are strong enough to snap tree branches and cause localized power outages. While the base temperature in Toronto is expected to hover around $-4$°C, the significant wind chill factor will make it feel closer to a bone-chilling $-17$°C or even $-20$°C in some areas. These conditions pose a risk of frostbite for those not adequately dressed for the extreme drop in “feels-like” temperatures.

In addition to the wind, several parts of the region are dealing with fresh snow accumulation. Following the two to four centimeters of snow recorded in parts of Toronto yesterday, a “Yellow Alert” remains in effect for northern areas including Barrie, Innisfil, Orangeville, and Orillia. While the wind is expected to taper off slightly to around 60 km/h by Tuesday afternoon and evening, the combination of blowing snow and reduced visibility is expected to make the morning commute particularly challenging across the provincial highway network.
