Canada Extends Special Work Permits for Iranian Nationals Until 2027 Amid Ongoing Instability

Ottawa: In a significant move to support the Iranian community amid ongoing instability and conflict in their home country, Canada has extended special work permit benefits for Iranian nationals until March 2027. According to a recent announcement from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the measure took effect retroactively starting March 1, 2026. This extension is designed to provide a safe haven for Iranians who are currently in Canada and unable to return home due to the worsening situation in Iran.

However, the IRCC has clarified that these specific benefits are not universal to all Iranians in the country; they are strictly available to those who already hold a valid Canadian work permit. Unlike previous iterations of this policy, students and those on visitor visas are not eligible for these specific concessions. To qualify, applicants must hold a valid Iranian passport and must have received their initial work permit on or before February 28, 2025. Eligible individuals can receive an extension of up to two years, though the duration remains subject to the validity of their passport.

There have also been notable changes to the application process, particularly regarding costs. While application fees were previously waived under emergency measures, the new regulations require applicants to pay fees ranging from $155 to $355, depending on the specific work permit category. The final deadline to submit applications under this policy is March 31, 2027. IRCC officials have strongly advised all eligible residents to submit their renewal applications well before their current permits expire to ensure their legal status remains uninterrupted.
