‘We are One Family’: Canada PM Mark Carney Invites PM Modi to Canada

NEW DELHI: In a significant step toward restoring diplomatic relations between Canada and India, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Canada. Standing alongside Modi, Carney declared, “We are one family.” While Prime Minister Modi has accepted the invitation, the dates for the visit are yet to be finalized. During their meeting in New Delhi, the two nations signed approximately ten commercial agreements worth $5.5 billion, along with five Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in sectors such as energy and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Meanwhile, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand dismissed a government official’s earlier remarks suggesting that India does not interfere in Canada’s internal affairs. She clarified that Canada has implemented strict regulations to prevent foreign interference. Her response follows strong protests from the Sikh community and intelligence agencies on the matter. Prime Minister Carney also informed Modi that Canada would continue to take action against cross-border repression.

Aiming for a major economic leap, both countries have decided to finalize a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by the end of this year. The most notable among the new deals is a $2.6 billion contract with Saskatchewan-based Cameco to supply uranium to India. Prime Minister Modi described this agreement—which ensures uranium for India’s civil nuclear needs from 2027 to 2035—as a turning point in the trade relationship between the two countries.
