EDMONTON: Zellers, a significant landmark in retail history, is poised to re-enter the market. The chain’s first new store will open at Londonderry Mall in Edmonton.
Established in 1928, the chain has undergone several closures and relaunches over the years. The new iteration will feature new ownership and a smaller physical footprint. Reports indicate that instead of the large buildings of the past, the new stores will occupy smaller spaces, not exceeding 50,000 square feet.
Joy Benitta, Zellers’ Chief Operating Officer, stated that the new stores will shift focus away from toys and medicines, concentrating instead on categories like clothing, home furnishings, and luggage. Benitta also announced plans to bring Zellers back to all major markets in the city.
The new locations will stock products from prominent brands, including Reebok, Disney, and Marvel. While the popular Zellers Diner of the past will not be making a return, Benitta noted that they are actively trying to introduce new concepts in the Food and Beverage segment.
