WASHINGTON – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday, following the recent talks between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
No final decision to end the war in Ukraine was reached during the Trump-Putin discussions. Efforts are now focused on ending the conflict through further dialogue.
After the talks, Trump stated that a direct peace agreement is preferable to a temporary ceasefire, adding that the discussions showed progress. He also hinted at the possibility of further meetings with the Russian president.
On social media, Donald Trump described his day in Alaska as “excellent and very successful.” He noted that his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, along with phone calls with President Zelenskyy and the NATO Secretary-General, were highly productive. Trump reiterated his belief that the best way to end the war is through a direct peace agreement, as he said ceasefire deals often do not last.
For his part, Zelenskyy stated that he supports President Trump’s proposal for a meeting between the heads of state of Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia. He clarified that key issues would be discussed at the leadership level.
The meeting between Trump and Putin was their first in six years, and the ongoing discussions have provided hope for peace in Ukraine.
