Wildfire smoke prompts air quality warning in Toronto

TORONTO: Environment Canada has issued an air quality warning for Toronto and much of Southern and Central Ontario due to smoke plumes from wildfires in the Prairies. The weather agency reported that Toronto’s Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) reached 6 on Wednesday night, which is considered a high-risk level.

Environment Canada states that fine particulate matter in wildfire smoke can pose a health risk to everyone, regardless of age or health status. However, seniors, pregnant individuals, infants, young children, those with pre-existing health conditions, and outdoor workers are particularly vulnerable to serious health problems from reduced air quality. The federal agency advises anyone experiencing symptoms such as headaches, eye or throat irritation, coughing, or shortness of breath to seek immediate medical attention.
