Wildfire on Vancouver Island forces over 400 evacuations

Vancouver: The BC Wildfire Service has reported that over 400 people have been evacuated due to an out-of-control wildfire on Vancouver Island. The Wesley Ridge wildfire at Cameron Lake, located between Port Alberni and Parksville, had spread across 511 hectares by Monday evening, according to the agency.

BCWS Information Officer Madison Dahl stated that firefighters have secured water supply and are working to identify and control hot spots near homes. Currently, 164 firefighters and eight helicopters are working around the clock to contain the blaze. Officials from the Nanaimo Regional District have confirmed that there are no reports of damage to any homes or establishments due to the wildfire. BCWS stated that the current objective is to prevent the fire from spreading to Highway 4 and to ensure the road remains open and safe for travel.
