VANCOUVER — An Indian-origin man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for a murder that took place three years ago in British Columbia. Balraj Basra (25) received the sentence from the British Columbia Supreme Court.
The sentence relates to the 2022 killing of Vishal Walia (38), who was fatally shot at a golf club near the University of British Columbia. Balraj Basra is the third defendant to be convicted in this murder case.
The court had previously sentenced Iqbal Kang (24) and Dheedra Baptist (21) in connection with the same incident. Kang received a total sentence of 22 years, which included five years for setting the vehicle on fire. Dheedra Baptist was handed a 17-year prison sentence without the possibility of parole.
Authorities stated that the three defendants attempted to flee after murdering Vishal Walia and torching the vehicle, but were apprehended within hours following an investigation. The motive for the murder has not yet been disclosed by the authorities.
