VIA Rail Launches Non-Stop Service on Toronto-Montreal Route to Speed Up Travel

MONTREAL — VIA Rail is set to introduce a new, non-stop train service between Toronto and Montreal, promising to significantly shorten travel times for passengers. The initiative, a three-month pilot project, will bypass key intermediate stations to create a faster journey along one of Canada’s busiest rail corridors.

Starting September 29, the dedicated express trains will not make stops at stations including Kingston, Cornwall, and Dorval. According to VIA Rail officials, this adjustment is expected to save travelers between 30 to 40 minutes on their trip, making the service a more attractive option for business professionals and travelers prioritizing speed. The service will operate daily, with departures from both Toronto’s Union Station and Montreal’s Central Station.

The new service is part of VIA Rail’s strategy to cater to different passenger needs along the high-demand corridor. While the majority of trains on the route will continue to serve all intermediate stops, this express option is designed for those who want a direct connection between the two major urban centers. It aims to compete more effectively with air travel and driving, providing a convenient and environmentally friendly alternative.

VIA Rail has acknowledged that the change may inconvenience some regular passengers who rely on the service from the bypassed stations. However, the company has stated that communities like Dorval will still have access to four other daily train services, ensuring they remain connected to the rail network. The company is asking for the cooperation of its customers as it evaluates the success of this new express model. The pilot project will help determine if there is a sustainable demand for non-stop rail travel and if the benefits of reduced travel time outweigh the potential impact on intermediate communities.
