KYIV: Ukraine has attacked a key pumping station on the Druzhba oil pipeline, which transports fuel from Russia to Europe, disrupting oil supplies to EU member states Hungary and Slovakia. These two nations are among the European countries that still receive Russian oil.
Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s Systems Force, announced that the attack targeted the Unecha pumping station in the Bryansk region. He stated that the strike was in retaliation for Russian aggression and aimed at critical infrastructure. Reports indicate that HIMARS rockets and drones were used in the assault.
The Hungarian and Slovakian governments have informed the European Union that due to the damage, Russian oil supply will be halted for at least five days. In a joint letter, the foreign ministers of both countries, Péter Szijjártó and Juraj Blanár, stated, “the physical and geographical reality is that a secure supply to our countries is not possible without this pipeline.”
The disruption highlights the vulnerability of energy infrastructure and the ongoing impact of the conflict on European energy security.
