MANCHESTER — Two people were killed and several others injured in an attack outside a synagogue in Manchester on Thursday morning, coinciding with Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
The incident occurred when an attacker drove a car into a crowd of people gathered outside the Jewish temple before proceeding to stab victims with a knife. Preliminary reports suggest that the two fatalities were a result of the stabbing.
Manchester Police responded to the scene and shot the assailant dead. Among those injured in the attack, the condition of three people is reported to be critical.
Police confirmed that a large number of people had gathered for worship at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue at the time of the attack.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued a statement condemning the violence. He described the attack as frightening, noting that the occurrence of such an event on Yom Kippur made it even more alarming.
