VANCOUVER: Two bears have been captured in Bella Coola, a Central Coast community in British Columbia, following a distressing incident last week where several students and teachers at a local elementary school were injured in a bear attack.
The BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) is currently testing the captured animals to determine if they were the ones responsible for the assault.
The COS confirmed that one of the bears has already been examined. However, it remains unclear whether that specific bear was involved in the attack. As a result, the COS plans to fit it with a GPS collar and relocate it to another area.
The attack occurred last Thursday at Acwsalcta School, which is owned by the Nuxalk First Nation. Multiple students and teachers sustained injuries in the incident.
In response to the recurring wildlife conflict, authorities have urged the public to exercise extreme caution in forest areas and along riverbanks. Residents are strictly advised not to approach any bears they may encounter.
