Two Arrested in Dominican Republic Following Fatal Shooting of Quebec Teenager

MONTREAL – Authorities in the Dominican Republic have arrested two men in connection with the targeted shooting death of a 19-year-old Quebec resident. Tristan Primeau-Poitras, of Sainte-Julienne, was killed early Monday, March 23, 2026, while vacationing with his family in the Puerto Plata region.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:00 a.m. along the Puerto Plata-Maimón Highway. Tristan and his older brother were traveling on a motorcycle to purchase food when they were intercepted by two individuals on another bike. During the confrontation, Tristan was shot at close range before the assailants fled the scene. Although he was rushed to the Centro Médico Bournigal, he was tragically pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Local police have identified the suspects as 23-year-old Jordi Yúnior Severiano and 30-year-old Rangel Merete Rodríguez. Both men were taken into custody after being identified by the victim’s brother during a police lineup. Investigators believe the shooting may have been a botched robbery attempt, a common concern for tourists traveling on secondary roads during late-night hours in the area.

Global Affairs Canada has confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the grieving family and remains in close contact with Dominican authorities as the investigation proceeds. Back in his hometown of Sainte-Julienne, community members have expressed deep shock and sadness, remembering Tristan as a vibrant young man whose life was cut short in a senseless act of violence.
