NEW YORK: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced new tariffs, imposing a 10% duty on imported timber and a 25% duty on imported kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and upholstered furniture.
The new tariffs are being justified under the argument that imports of wood and furniture products are detrimental to U.S. national security. Trump claims that the import of wood products weakens the U.S. economy, leading to the closure of sawmills, disrupting wood product supply chains, and reducing the use of the domestic U.S. wood industry.
The tariff rates are set to take effect starting October 14. However, the duties on imported kitchen cabinets and vanities from countries that have reached an agreement with the United States will increase to 30% starting January 1, 2026, while the tariff for countries without an agreement will rise to 50%.
Furthermore, new tariffs will come into effect tomorrow, October 1st, on imports from three other sectors, including pharmaceuticals and heavy trucks.
