NEW YORK: U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian products, signing an executive order to that effect. This move increases the total tariff on Indian goods to 50 percent. Trump stated that India’s purchase of oil from Russia is the primary reason behind this decision. He also noted that India faces the highest tariffs among Asian countries.
Trump accused India of not engaging in significant trade with the U.S. and being a country that imposes high tariffs. He added that these tariffs are hindering trade agreements with India. Trump further asserted that India’s continued oil trade with Russia goes against international efforts to isolate Russia in the Ukraine war.
Meanwhile, in response to the additional tariffs on Indian products, India’s Ministry of External Affairs pointed out that the U.S. itself purchases uranium hexafluoride from Russia.
