Trump announces 100% tariff on foreign-made movies

NEW YORK — U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 100% tariff on foreign-produced films, alleging that American movie production is “collapsing.”

Announcing the tariff on his Truth Social platform, he wrote, “Other countries stole the movie-making business from America, like stealing candy from a baby.”

However, it remains unclear how the proposed tariff would be implemented, which countries it would target, or if it would apply to all imported film content.

The movie tariff is expected to severely impact major studios that heavily rely on international box office revenue and cross-border co-productions. Furthermore, given that modern film production—including filming, financing, post-production, and visual effects—is often spread across multiple nations, the specific scope of those affected by the tariff is also uncertain.
