Toyota Recalls Over 12,000 Trucks in Canada Due to Rearview Camera Glitch

OTTAWA – Transport Canada has issued a recall for over 12,000 Toyota Tundra trucks across the country due to a software defect in the rearview camera system. The recall affects Tundra and Tundra Hybrid models manufactured between 2024 and 2025 that are equipped with the panoramic view monitor system. According to the federal agency, a glitch in the parking assist electronic control unit software can cause the screen to fail or display incorrect images when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. This failure is a significant safety concern as Canadian law mandates that rearview images must be clearly visible to the driver while reversing to ensure pedestrian and vehicle safety.

The issue in Canada is part of a larger North American safety action, as Toyota has recalled approximately 162,000 similar trucks in the United States for the same malfunction. Toyota explained that the problem is rooted in how the software processes camera signals, which can lead to a black or frozen screen. This is particularly hazardous for large pickup trucks, which have substantial blind spots that the rearview camera is designed to mitigate.

To rectify the problem, Toyota has committed to updating the software for the affected units at no cost to the owners. The company confirmed that the fix involves a simple update to the electronic control unit, which can be completed at any authorized dealership. Toyota will begin notifying owners by mail, instructing them to bring their vehicles in for the necessary service. In the meantime, drivers are urged to exercise extra caution when reversing their vehicles.
