“Toronto Unveils World’s First Fully Solar-Powered Subway Line”

Ottawa : Toronto made history today as the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) officially launched Line 5, the world’s first fully solar-powered subway line. Spanning 12 kilometers and connecting downtown Toronto to the city’s northern suburbs, the line is powered by a network of solar panels installed across station rooftops and adjacent green spaces. The project, completed ahead of schedule on April 2, 2025, is part of Canada’s push toward net-zero emissions by 2050.

Mayor Olivia Chow hailed it as “a bold step into a sustainable future,” though critics argue the $2.3 billion price tag may strain municipal budgets. Commuters reported smooth rides and shorter wait times, with the TTC promising to expand solar initiatives to other lines by 2030.
