Toronto: Ontario Premier Doug Ford has called for Canada to impose the same tariffs on US products that the United States levies on Canadian goods, unless a new trade agreement is reached by Friday. Ford urged the federal government to include a similar 50% tariff on US aluminum and steel. Meanwhile, Doug Ford stated that discussions are ongoing and expressed hope that an agreement would be reached to eliminate tariffs on Canadian products.
US President Donald Trump had announced that a 35% tariff would be imposed on several Canadian products starting August 1st. Mark Carney stated that Canada’s trade discussions with the US are at a critical juncture. Carney also clarified that while there are similarities between the US-Canada talks and discussions with Europe, there are also many differences. However, he emphasized that Canada would only accept an agreement that is beneficial to the country.
