WINNIPEG: A hockey arena in Winnipeg’s East Kildonan area, the Terry Sawchuk Arena, has been closed due to an “unexpected and significant” structural issue, City of Winnipeg officials confirmed.
The critical issue was discovered by staff during a recent restoration project at the facility, prompting the immediate closure.
A city spokesperson stated that the closure was implemented to ensure public safety. “We understand this is disruptive to arena users and are working hard to reopen the facility as soon as it is safe,” the spokesperson said.
The City is currently in the process of contacting all rental groups to help relocate ice time, wherever possible. While the City did not provide specific details on the nature of the structural flaw, officials are working on a plan to address it, including options for remediation and a timeline.
The arena will remain closed until further notice.
