Washington: A report indicates that Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada are causing concern within the Republican Party. Party leaders say this could negatively affect the party in the upcoming mid-term elections. Party leaders have expressed the view that this is a time when the U.S. should be cooperating with friendly countries like Canada to counter China’s unfair trade practices, yet Trump is creating disputes.
The new concerns are due to the 35% tariff Trump has imposed on certain Canadian products not covered under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (USMCA). This new tariff is in addition to the existing duties on steel, aluminum, and copper.
Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul has warned that the economy is showing signs of weakening. Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas also stated that the uncertainty in trade is affecting job availability and investments. Additionally, Kentucky Republican Senator Mitch McConnell has also criticized Trump’s tariffs. Despite these concerns, the Republican Party has not taken significant action to reduce the tariffs.
