SUVs and Pickup Trucks Top Target List for Canadian Auto Thieves

OTTAWA — Expensive new SUVs and pickup trucks have become the prime targets for thieves across Canada, despite a slight reduction in the overall number of vehicles stolen, according to a new report from the Equité Association.

The report identifies the Toyota RAV4 as the most stolen vehicle last year, with over 2,000 units targeted by criminals. The list of preferred stolen vehicles is overwhelmingly dominated by large, high-value models. Excluding the Honda Civic, which ranked fifth with approximately 1,800 thefts, the rest of the top ten includes popular SUVs like the Honda CR-V and Jeep Wrangler, and major pickup trucks such as the Dodge Ram and Ford F-150. Two additional Toyota models—the Highlander SUV and the Tundra pickup—also secured spots in the top ten.

Despite a 19% decrease in the total number of vehicles stolen nationwide last year compared to 2023, the financial impact remains severe. The Equité Association reports that vehicle thefts cost Canadian citizens over $1 billion annually in insurance claims.

The report highlights that vehicles manufactured in 2020 or later, which possess a higher resale value, are the most frequently targeted models. The theft of luxury vehicles is also increasing, with certain Lexus and Mercedes-Benz models being among the most frequently stolen.

Geographically, Ontario and Quebec remain the areas with the highest rates of auto theft in Canada. However, the association also noted a growing trend of newer model thefts in Alberta.
