STM service gradually resumes after maintenance union halts strike

MONTREAL: Maintenance workers for the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) have called off their weeks-long strike, with service reportedly resuming as of 6 a.m. today, according to the union representing the employees.

The decision to return to work came after the provincial government threatened to pass back-to-work legislation, signaling an end to the labor dispute that was escalating toward a complete public transit shutdown.

However, the Maintenance Workers’ Union, affiliated with the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN), stated that while they are ending the strike, they seek a negotiated contract achieved through discussion, not one imposed by the Minister.

The union has been engaged in contract negotiations with the STM over the past several days. This resolution, however, does not affect the planned strike action by STM bus drivers and metro operators, who are still scheduled to walk off the job on November 15 and 16.
