Senate passes resolution that would repeal Trump’s tariffs on Canada

WASHINGTON D.C.: The U.S. Senate has passed legislation aimed at repealing the existing U.S. tariffs imposed on Canadian products. The resolution, which was introduced on Wednesday, passed by a narrow margin with a vote of 50-46.

The vote saw four Republican senators cross party lines to side with the Democrats, offering crucial support for the measure. The Republican senators who voted in favor of the repeal included Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, Mitch McConnell from Kentucky, and Rand Paul.

Despite the Senate’s success, the legislative effort faces an uphill battle, as the resolution is considered unlikely to pass in the Republican-majority House of Representatives.

Trump Threatens Counter-Action

In a contrasting development, President Donald Trump announced a threat to increase import duties on Canadian products by an additional 10%. Trump stated that this increase is a direct response to an anti-tariff television advertisement broadcast by the Ontario government.

The advertisement, which was critical of the U.S. tariffs, notably featured quotes from former U.S. President Ronald Reagan, drawing sharp criticism from Trump.
