WINNIPEG — Severe wintry weather and an impending blizzard have forced a series of school closures and bus cancellations across southern Manitoba this Wednesday. As a powerful “Alberta Clipper” storm system moves through the region, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued blizzard warnings for several communities, including Winnipeg and Brandon. Forecasters are predicting up to 20 centimetres of snow and wind gusts reaching 90 km/h, which are expected to create “near-zero visibility” and dangerous driving conditions.
School and Bus Status for Wednesday
In response to the deteriorating forecast, several school divisions have taken preemptive action to ensure the safety of students and staff:
- Rolling River School Division: All schools are closed for the day.
- Park West School Division: All schools are closed due to the forecasted blizzard.
- Prairie Spirit School Division: All schools are closed.
- Division scolaire franco-manitobaine (DSFM): Buses have been cancelled for École Saint-Lazare and École Jours de Plaines.
- Brandon School Division: While schools remain open, buses are not operating outside the city limits.
Blizzard Warning in Effect
The blizzard is expected to hit the Manitoba parklands Wednesday afternoon before intensifying across southwestern Manitoba, the Interlake, and the Red River Valley by the evening. The storm is projected to last through Thursday.
In addition to heavy snowfall, ECCC warned of a risk of freezing rain, which could lead to icy roads and walkways before the temperatures plummet. “Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility. Public safety is the priority,” the agency stated.
City of Winnipeg Braces for Impact
While many Winnipeg schools currently remain open, residents are bracing for a significant rush-hour disruption. Wind gusts of up to 90 km/h are expected to cause widespread blowing snow, making navigation difficult even within city limits.
Officials are urging Manitobans to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay updated on the latest weather alerts as conditions are expected to worsen rapidly throughout the evening.
