OTTAWA: A new report indicates a rise in anti-Palestinian racism in Canada. The report states that schools and employers are taking retaliatory action against individuals who speak about the war in Gaza, often linking Palestinian culture to terrorism.
According to the report released by the York University’s Islamophobia Research Hub, both public and private institutions have been found to violate the freedom of expression of those who speak about the Gaza conflict. The report calls on the Canadian government to officially recognize anti-Palestinian racism and provide training to identify and prevent such discrimination.
The document highlights cases where law students, teachers, and health professionals faced investigations or disciplinary actions for speaking about Gaza. It also notes that students have been harassed or punished for wearing the traditional keffiyeh scarf or posting the Palestinian flag on social media.
Furthermore, the report criticizes Canadian banks, including the Royal Bank of Canada and Scotiabank, for their failure to take a clear stance on the Palestinian issue.
