Quebec judge fines man $5,000 for improper use of artificial intelligence in court

MONTREAL: A Quebec resident has been ordered to pay a substantial fine by the Superior Court for the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in an attempt to defend himself in court. Jean Laprade was the individual penalized, facing a $5,000 fine for his actions.

The penalty stemmed from a case related to a 2019 business transaction, where Laprade was found to have submitted documents that distorted the law. The fine was imposed following allegations that he had wasted the court’s time by presenting false information that was generated using AI tools.

The court rejected Laprade’s petition which sought to overturn a previous decision by the Paris International Arbitration Chamber, which had fined him $2.7 million concerning an airplane he received through the business deal.

In addition to the $5,000 fine, the Quebec court ruled that Laprade must pay the full $2.7 million in compensation to two aviation companies for his use of the seized aircraft. In his judgment, Justice Luc Morin emphasized the importance of accountability, stating that individuals bear the full responsibility for all documents submitted to the court.
