TORONTO: Hamilton Police have issued a public warning regarding a spike in the circulation of counterfeit banknotes across the city. The fraudulent currency, primarily in the $20, $50, and $100 denominations, is reportedly manufactured to a high standard, closely mimicking the look and feel of genuine polymer notes. However, a key finding is that these fake notes lack the crucial security features of authentic currency.
The counterfeit notes are being passed primarily through retail establishments and during private transactions conducted via online platforms. To combat the spread of these fake bills, police have released a list of crucial red flags the public should watch for the same serial number appearing on multiple banknotes, The presence of specific text like ‘Prop Money’ or ‘For Motion Picture Use’ on the holographic strip or other areas of the note, The holographic strip appears to be a glued-on sticker rather than an integrated part of the note, The printing appears blurred, washed-out, or indistinct.
Police urge anyone who suspects they have received a counterfeit bill to immediately notify the authorities. They advised the public to carefully examine all banknotes when handling cash and to refuse any they suspect may be fake. Police also emphasized that individuals should avoid taking matters into their own hands, as the person passing the money may not be aware it is counterfeit.
