OTTAWA: Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre has stated that he is not prepared to accept any trade agreement that includes sector-specific tariffs. Poilievre’s comments came amidst ongoing trade discussions between the US and Canada. He said he has no interest in imposing tariffs on sectors such as steel, aluminum, and automobiles, and that he desires a tariff-free agreement.
Poilievre also criticized Prime Minister Marc Carney’s remarks that Canada’s priority is to secure a “better deal” rather than a timely one. “The Liberal government has led Canada to a state of over-dependence on the United States,” Poilievre alleged. “Prime Minister Carney is negotiating from a weak position.”
He also blamed laws that he says hinder the country’s development, including Bill C-69, the industrial carbon tax, and the oil and gas sector’s emission cap. Poilievre put forward his plan for a “Canadian Sovereignty Act,” aimed at strengthening Canada’s economy by repealing these laws.
