Poilievre calls for temporary foreign worker program to be scrapped

MISSISSAUGA: Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre has called for the termination of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, stating it makes it difficult for young Canadian citizens to find jobs. “The Liberal government must answer for pushing our own youth out of jobs and replacing them with low-wage temporary foreign workers from impoverished countries,” said Poilievre. He added that the fault lies not with the temporary foreign workers, but with the Liberal government and the Liberal corporate elites who exploit these workers.

Poilievre said that while the Liberal government has stated it will accept only 82,000 people through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program in 2025, the federal government has already issued 105,000 permits. However, the Liberal government refutes this claim. The office of Immigration Minister Lena Diab states that only 33,722 temporary foreign workers have entered the country from January to June. “This is 40% of the total TFWs expected this year. Overall, there has been a decrease of 125,903 new temporary workers in the January to June 2025 period compared to the same period in 2024,” the Immigration Minister’s office announced.

The Conservative Party says it will abolish the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) program and create a separate plan to recruit workers for Canada’s agricultural sector. “Not long ago, young Canadians could get entry-level jobs, earn an income to pay for their studies, and build a future,” said Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner in a statement. She accused the Liberal government’s new policies of being a setback for Canadian youth.
