PEI to Launch Specialized Training Program for Newly Elected Municipal Officials

CHARLOTTETOWN – Prince Edward Island is preparing to launch a comprehensive training initiative for mayors and councillors elected in the upcoming municipal elections. The program, a joint effort between the provincial government and the Federation of PEI Municipalities, aims to equip local leaders with the essential tools for effective governance.

A one-day intensive session is scheduled to take place in Charlottetown toward the end of November. The curriculum will focus on key areas such as municipal responsibilities, jurisdictional boundaries, and administrative legislation. Satya Sen, Executive Director of the Federation, highlighted that this centralized approach is particularly beneficial for smaller municipalities that may lack the financial resources to conduct independent orientation programs.

Summerside Councillor Nick Cameron noted that a deep understanding of the Municipal Government Act is crucial for boosting efficiency and fostering a professional working environment. For those unable to attend the initial session, the government announced that shorter regional workshops will be held in early 2027. Additionally, an updated handbook featuring revised governance guidelines will be published to serve as a permanent resource for elected officials.
