One Dead, Two Injured after apartment fire in Toronto’s east end

TORONTO – A tragic fire in an apartment building in Toronto’s Little India neighborhood early Sunday morning has resulted in one fatality and two injuries, according to the Toronto Police Service.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene in the Gerrard Street East and Glenside Avenue area shortly after midnight. The blaze prompted the closure of Gerrard Street East at Greenwood Avenue for several hours, though police confirmed that all roads were reopened shortly after 7 a.m.

Firefighters successfully rescued several occupants from the building and managed to bring the fire under control. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and is on-site to conduct an investigation into the incident.
